Family Reunification in Switzerland – What You Should Know

Family reunification allows persons residing in Switzerland (with a residence permit or permanent settlement permit) to bring their immediate family members to join them. This rule applies to both Swiss citizens and foreign residents, with specific conditions.

Who can apply?

  • Swiss citizens

  • Holders of a B or C residence permit (e.g. EU/EFTA citizens or third-country nationals)

Which family members can be reunited?

  • Spouse or registered partner

  • Children under 18

  • In exceptional cases, parents (e.g. for minors living in Switzerland)

Key requirements:

  • Proof of family relationship (e.g. marriage or birth certificate)

  • Suitable housing for the family

  • Sufficient income to support the family (e.g. employment contract)

  • Integration potential of the family member (e.g. language skills, willingness to learn)

When to submit the application?

  • For EU/EFTA citizens: register the family member within 14 days after arrival in Switzerland

  • For third-country nationals: apply for the visa before travelling, at the Swiss embassy

Where to apply?

  • Cantonal migration office (Migrationsamt) of the place of residence

  • Swiss embassy or consulate abroad for applications from outside Switzerland

How long does it take?

  • Generally 1–6 months, depending on nationality, documents, and cantonal procedures
